Helping People with Parkinson’s Disease Communicate

People with Parkinson’s disease (PD) may experience decreased loudness when speaking, making it challenging for them to communicate with others. This may lead to social withdrawal from their favorite activities, influencing their quality of life and independence.

LSVT LOUD Therapy is an effective treatment program for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Stroke Recovery, and other neurological conditions. It has been studied for nearly 20 years with published research supporting improvements in vocal loudness, intonation, and voice quality for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. Recent research has also documented the effectiveness of this therapy approach in improving common Parkinson’s Disease problems of imprecise articulation, diminished facial expression, and impaired swallowing. Further, this approach has been successfully applied to individuals with other neurological conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.

LSVT LOUD Therapy improves vocal loudness using an intensive, high-effort vocal exercise program. Treatment is typically provided in four consecutive sessions for four consecutive weeks. Sessions consist of one-hour individual treatments with an emphasis on the following:

* Stimulating the speech mechanism
* Heightening awareness of speaking volume level
* Increasing the capacity to speak at an adequate loudness level for speech to be understood.

If you are concerned with how your speaking volume may be affecting your ability to communicate with others, contact Arlene L. Luberoff, MA, CCC-SLP, who is a speech-language pathologist certified in LSVT LOUD, to see if this program would be appropriate for you or your loved one. Arlene has over 30 years of experience in identifying, evaluating, and treating a wide range of communication disorders.
